    Norman Greenbaum (born November 20, 1942, Malden, Massachusetts, United States) is a singer-songwriter. He studied music at Boston University. Greenbaum is best known for his song "Spirit in the Sky", which sold two million copies across 1969 and 1970. This disc sold over one million by May 1970 alone, and received a gold disc awarded by the R.I.A.A.. The song, with its combination of 'heavy' guitar, hand-clapping, and spiritual lyrics, was a one-hit wonder. The song has been used in many films, advertisements, and television shows.

   Normand Greenbaum (né le 20 novembre 1942, à Malden, Massachusetts, Etats-Unis) est un auteur-compositeur-chanteur. Il a étudié la musique à l'Université de Boston. Greenbaum est mieux connu pour sa chanson "Spirit in the Sky", lequel a vendu deux millions de copies entre 1969 et 1970. Ce disque fut vendu à plus d'un million d'exemplaires rien qu'en mai 1970  et reçu un disque d'or attribué par le R.I.A.A.. La chanson, avec son accompagnement de 'heavy' guitare, d'applaudissements et de chant spirituel, étonna et fut un succès. La chanson a été utilisée dans beaucoup de films, publicités et émissions télévisées.



    Greenbaum is notable for the rare achievement of having recorded two one-hit wonders. In 1968, under the name Dr. West's Medicine Show and Junk Band, he recorded the novelty hit "The Eggplant That Ate Chicago". Greenbaum had a second song in the charts in 1970. "Canned Ham" reached #26 in Canada and #46 in the USA. His last chart hit in America was "California Earthquake", which reached #93 in 1971.

   Greenbaum est notamment connu pour avoir enregistré deux chansons à succès. En 1968, sous le nom de "Dr. West's Medicine Show and Junk Band", il a enregistré la chanson  "The Eggplant That Ate Chicago". Greenbaum eut une deuxième chanson dans la "charts" en 1970. "Canned Ham" atteignit la 26è place au Canada et la 46è aux Etats-Unis. Son dernier succès en Amérique était "California Earthquake", qui fut 93è en 1971.



    Another group, Doctor and the Medics, became a one-hit wonder of sorts with their version of "Spirit in the Sky" in 1986 (they had a minor hit with the follow-up "Burn", and a hit album "Laughing At The Pieces"), and British television stars The Kumars also became one-hit wonders in the UK, when they reached No. 1 with Gareth Gates with the same song in 2003.

   Also in 1986, an all-girl punk band called Fuzzbox had a hit with the song, as well.

    Interestingly, although his one hit "Spirit in the Sky" is considered by many to be a Jesus rock song with a heavily Christian theme, Greenbaum was and still is a practicing Jew. He was inspired to write the song after observing country singers Dolly Parton and Porter Wagoner singing a religious song on television.

   En fait, bien que plusieurs considèrent son succès "Spirit in the Sky" (l'Esprit dans le Ciel") comme une chanson rock de Jésus avec un thème lourdement Chrétien (bien dans l'esprit des années hippy ), Greenbaum était et est toujours un Juif pratiquant. Il a été inspiré, pour écrire la chanson, par des chanteurs country comme Dolly Parton et Porter Wagoner après les avoir entendu chanter une chanson religieuse à la télévision.


   Greenbaum lives in Petaluma, California. He no longer performs in public, but continues to promote concerts and lives off the royalties from his songs. His song, Spirit in the Sky, is featured on the video game Rock Band 2.
